These terms cover your use of Chordwright, an app for writing chord progressions and understanding why they work.
Chordwright is made and sold by Matthew Edwards, ABN 44 523 291 099, a sole trader based in New South Wales, Australia. In these terms, "I", "me" and "my" mean Matthew Edwards, and "you" means the person using the app.
Chordwright suggests chords that fit what you have already written, plays them back, and explains the harmonic reason behind each suggestion. It is a writing and learning tool. Its suggestions come from rulesets describing common harmonic practice, and common practice is a description of how music has usually behaved, not a rule about how your music must behave. Chordwright will sometimes call something unusual that you meant, and it cannot tell you whether a progression is any good. Treat it as a well-read collaborator, not a marker.
The progressions you write in Chordwright are your own work and I claim no rights in them. You do not owe me a credit, a royalty, or a mention, and you can use anything you write commercially. The app itself, including its rulesets, explanations, mood presets and audio, stays mine.
Chordwright stores everything locally on your device. There is no account and no server, so you are responsible for backing up your own work, and if you delete the app or lose your device without a backup, your progressions are gone and I cannot recover them. See the Privacy Policy for the detail.
Chordwright is free to use. The free version includes the major pack, full playback, every explanation, and up to three saved progressions. Chordwright Pro adds the remaining ruleset packs, unlimited saved progressions, gap fill, and the export features.
Pro is sold three ways, and you choose which:
Prices are in Australian dollars and are current at the date above. The App Store shows you the price in your own currency, including any local tax, before you confirm. The price shown in the app at the moment you buy is the one that applies.
The annual and monthly plans renew automatically. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase, and again at the start of each new period unless you cancel. Apple charges the renewal within 24 hours before the current period ends.
If you take the free trial, it runs for 14 days and then converts to a paid annual subscription at A$39.99 unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. Chordwright offers to remind you on your device before that happens, but the reminder is a courtesy and not a substitute for cancelling. Any unused part of a free trial is forfeited if you buy a subscription before the trial ends.
Cancel at any time in the iOS Settings app, under your Apple Account, then Subscriptions, or from the Manage Subscription button in Chordwright's own settings. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not end the period you have already paid for, and Pro stays on until that period runs out. I cannot cancel a subscription on your behalf.
Every purchase is processed by Apple through StoreKit, and billing, refunds and payment disputes are handled by Apple under its own terms. I have no access to your payment details and I cannot issue a refund myself. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. This does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, described below.
If you are a consumer in Australia, Chordwright comes with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law, including guarantees that it is of acceptable quality and reasonably fit for its ordinary purpose. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any guarantee, right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law where doing so would be unlawful. If any part of these terms would have that effect, that part does not apply.
Where the law allows me to limit my liability, my liability to you for failing to meet a consumer guarantee is limited to resupplying the app or paying the cost of having it resupplied.
Subject to the section above, Chordwright is a writing and teaching tool and I do not promise that it is free of bugs, that its harmonic explanations suit every style or teaching syllabus, or that its suggestions are right for the piece you are writing. Music theory is taught in more than one way, and reasonable teachers disagree. Use your ears.
Use Chordwright to write your own music. Please don't copy, decompile, redistribute or resell the app, or extract its rulesets or audio for use elsewhere. Nothing here limits anything you are permitted to do under the Copyright Act 1968.
Chordwright's playback uses instruments extracted from GeneralUser GS by S. Christian Collins, used under its licence, which permits use in commercial software.
If these terms change, this page will be updated and the date above will change. Changes apply from the date they are published, and only to your use of the app after that date.
A change will never reduce what you have already paid for. If you bought the lifetime unlock, it stays yours on the terms that applied when you bought it. If a subscription price changes, Apple tells you and asks you to agree before the higher price is charged. If you do not accept a change, you can cancel or stop using the app. Nothing in this section affects your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
These terms are governed by the law of New South Wales, Australia. This does not take away the benefit of any consumer protection law that applies where you live.
